Lunar Gym Info/Requests
The Gym
The Aesthetics
Seen from above, the Lunar Gym resembles a hexagonal sun in the middle of large gardens. Seen from within, it is a mix of large rooms with white surfaces and black furniture, with little other color to be seen. The lighting, while usually coming from round uncovered white bulb, may sometimes be replaced by the purple flames of a Chandelure. The effect can be either soothing or unsettling, depending on one's preferences.
The Gym is open from Monday to Thursday, from dusk to dawn. But is it truly empty at other times?
The Gardens
Gardens that surround most of the gym, separated in five sections. Various pathways run through the north, southeast and southwest sections, sneaking between hundreds of night-blooming flowers. A few lanterns shaped like full moons are spread throughout, allowing visitors to behold the grounds at their best without risk of injury. Large basins surrounding a fountain take up most of the space in the northeast and northwest gardens. Both pathways and basins are built from mirror pieces, polished daily by Cecil's team.
The Entrance
A pair of entrance rooms, functionally identical. These are the only rooms with decorated floors; someone paying attention to the ground will recognize that the black spots covering the tiles are small symbols, representing the various types a Pokémon can be. Strangely enough, it appears that the black arrows connecting them have been incorrectly placed, and are now pointing in the wrong direction...
The Corridor
A pure white hexagonal corridor connecting the other rooms. Well, mostly pure white; some of its walls are adorned by a set of six paintings, each odder than the previous:
- A fire so great and terrible, the sea that surrounds it is boiling;
- A long frozen lance, piercing an ornate metallic shield;
- A large spider, feasting on a helpless bird caught in its web;
- A dragon, falling from the skies as lightning strikes it;
- A tiny fairy, engulfed by a menacing fanged shadow;
- A brave warrior, marching unharmed through pools of acid.
In addition, a PC found to the south of the room allows challengers to select their favored type of match, and randomly chooses Cecil's team if necessary. It also allows challengers to make changes to their own team.
The Waiting Rooms
Twin rooms at opposite ends of the Gym. Each includes three large, comfortable bean bag chairs and a large table, to allow challengers to relax and rest before or after the battle. Pokémon are welcome, as long as they are not too large or destructive for the premises. The doors can be locked from the insides, allowing for privacy, though one must remember that Cecil has many Pokémon who can kick them down if needed.
The Kitchen
A normal kitchen, with plenty of counter space, all the appliances one might need, and room for six. Challengers are welcome to prepare themselves a meal after arriving or before leaving, though they can also eat their fill from the leftovers stored in the fridge. Cleaning after one's self is, of course, basic courtesy. A door leads to the back garden.
The Study
Cecil's study, containing a work desk, a large bookshelf and another of those bean bag chairs. Cecil naps there in between challenges, when he's not busy with maintenance or paperwork. Off-limits to challengers, barring a personal invitation. A door leads to the back garden.
The Battlefield
Mirrors, mirrors on the walls, ground and ceiling, who is the strongest of them all? Their presence makes battles visually interesting, certainly, but perhaps they hide secrets of their own...?

Two types of battle are available: Regular Matches and Mirror Matches.
Regular Match
Explanation: A match against one of four existing teams, randomly selected by the PC in the corridor. During regular matches, Cecil is somewhat more merciful; in fact, a challenger whose attacks are not quite as effective as they should be may lead him to use weak attacks that should not possibly cause damage...
Prerequisites: None, though a full team of level 100 Pokémon is strongly recommended.

Strategy:
Mirror Match
Explanation: A match between two identical teams at max level, available only to the strongest and most confident trainers. During a mirror match, Cecil offers no mercy. An overconfident challenger who does not understand the Gym's theme is in for a bad time.
Prerequisites: A full team of level 100 Pokémon, from species that Cecil also trains. An understanding of the Gym's true nature is strongly recommended.

Mirror Match!
Team: Zoroark (Sable), Pyroar (Ria), Rapidash (Silver), Tyrantrum (Cevey), Milotic (Sea), Arcanine (Fio)
Strategy: Sion will lead with Sable disguised as an arcanine just to get a feel for Cecil's team. If he sees a rapidash, arcanine, or tyrantrum he'll immediately have Sable use U-Turn; if it does solid damage then he'll send out Ria or Silver to blast away with fire-type attacks, but if it reveals Cecil's Zoroark he'll use Sea instead. From there, his plan is to knock out as much of Cecil's team as quickly as possible. Ria and Silver will of course be emphasizing the fire-type attacks, with Silver in particular leading with Flame Charge to up that speed a bit for a bit of an edge, and Megahorn should any of Cecil's have the Flash Fire ability. Sea is there to stall, using Rain Dance to dampen the fire attacks, Aqua Ring and Rest for HP recovery, and Ice Beam when going on the offensive. Sable will make appearances to confuse the matter whenever possible, ideally Sion will try to send him out at a point when he knows he's up against Cecil's zoroark, to try to slip in a STAB-boosted dark type attack there. Should Sable go down, though, Cevey is the backup plan to Crunch that zoroark and maybe Iron Tail the fire types until he goes down.
But Sion's real ace in the hole is Fio. Sion will absolutely emphasize trying to take down Cecil's non-fire types first if at all possible, so as to take advantage of Fio's Flash Fire ability. But that's not all! He knows there's a chance Cecil's arcanine may well have the same ability (or even the rapidash!), so instead, with a little boost from Sunny Day, Fio will be using Solar Beam to take down whatever remains.
Sion will, naturally, have given his team items, most notably Fio will have an Expert Belt to make his super effective attacks hit that much harder, Cevey will have a Razor Claw to up that critical hit ratio, and Sea will have a Life Orb to make up for being otherwise mostly defensive. The others will have plain old versatile Sitrus berries.
Sion plans to see how far he can get with minimal use of items, but he'll still bring along his usual assortment of hyper potions and revives just in case and use them if needed. But if he can pull off his Solar Beam shenanigans without them, then all the better!
Notes: Sion's roster is horribly out of date, Ria would be at level 100 like the others by now! Also, unless you have other plans for Cecil, I was thinking Sion could come by for the match sometime this week--he wanted to do it earlier, but things happened. (Also do you want to just handwave Sion making a friendly visit to the gym from a few months ago? I mean, I'm always happy to backtag, but at this point... XD)
... and yes, Cevey the tyrantrum is named after Cecil, whom Sion acquired the egg from. Sion has a sense of humor about these things sometimes. ;)

Please note that the Gym will be closed until next week due to an... unplanned coma issue and resulting mild head injury. Though Sion's welcome to try his luck with the door, there's still a few Pokémon and leftover cookies on the premises!
no subject
Hahaha, next week works too! Sion would probably call ahead anyway just to give Cecil a heads up...
no subject
Luckily, Rosie is very expressive even with the language barrier. That, or she'll just point the gear at the bed, that works too.
no subject
unless Cecil's already had successful NPC challengers butBecause I mean while Sion's not gonna let himself lose (hence bringing the items just in case) he really wants to take the chance to see what he can pull off. :3
And that certainly works! Pointing the 'gear at the bed, if nothing else... Do you want to do any sort of log, back- or foward- dated or otherwise, or just handwave?

Psychic
Ralts, Lunatone*, Elgyem, (Fennekin), Pa'u Oricorio
Recommendation: Unless he wants a Gardevoir to match his Gallade, there's a few decent Fennkins in there. The Oricorio can have all its level up moves, but only one or two easy TMs with that.
Ghost
Shuppet, (Snorunt), Litwick, Phantump, Honedge, Sableye, Sandygast, Sensu Oricorio
Recommendation: There's a Sableye with 18 egg moves, and the others are also decent. All Shuppet options are pretty good. The previous Oricorio note applies to this one too.
Bug
Larvesta, Caterpie*, Heracross, Ledyba
Recommendation: Anything except the Caterpie. Everything that comes out of the Heracross/Ledian pair is going to be particularly awesome.
Rock
(Onix), Lunatone*, Lileep, Omanyte, Carbink*, Amaura, Tyrunt, Aerodactyl
Recommendation: Most of the potential Amauras have 10+ egg moves. They are beautiful.

Heracross is an excellent choice! Here are the two available movesets. Pick whichever you'd like:
A
Aerial Ace, Return, Rain Dance, Toxic, Round, Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Focus Punch
B

Strategy: Ford is sending Roswell out first, mainly to set up a Trick Room. That's her first order of business because three of the six Pokémon he's brought are slow as heck and in this kind of battle going first can do a lot for you. Roswell can then Thunderbolt Zira into next week with her disgustingly high special attack. With Trick Room in effect she's also faster than Terra, and since Gardevoir is now weak to Psychic Roswell should have no trouble taking it out (finally a good time to use Synchronoise!) -- though if she does, she also knows Recover and can Protect in a pinch.
This is mostly so she can survive through Terra in order to reset the Trick Room before she goes down, allowing Skadi to come in and go faster than Firion. Skadi's going to be setting up Stealth Rocks, banking on her high HP to take at least one hit so she can use the next turn to Stone Edge. If Stone Edge hits, great! If it misses, Ford will have Skadi use her lower power but higher accuracy Rock and Ice attacks instead. When Firion falls and Longjing comes in it will ideally take some nice damage from the rocks, and hopefully be right about when the Trick Room's running out. Skadi's going to keep going with her Rock-type attacks against it for as long as she can, and when she faints Claudia is going to come in. She has plenty of Flying moves to deal with Longjing if she needs to, though in an ideal world she won't have to make an appearance until Ice-bro shows up. When it does she'll be ready to meet it with plenty of Poison moves plus the ability to Roost or Leech Life to regain health.
Which leaves Bavarois. As usual, Ford brought the Ninetales, and he'll be setting up a Sunny Day right off the bat and then hitting that Goodra with some extra-powerful Fire moves that are further boosted by his Charcoal. He'll also be trying to use the bright light in combination with the mirrors to make it more difficult for Bavarois to see what it's doing and hopefully give Mr. Fox another leg up.
This is of course assuming everything goes as well as it possibly can for him. In case everything doesn't go as well as it possibly can, in the back are Titania and MIPS. Titania has a good host of Bug, Steel and Normal moves with some others thrown in for flavor, and if she has to come out and use her Sturdy ability to fire off an Explosion to deal with an opponent who's proving particularly pesky she will. Ford might employ her against Firion and Longjing if either of them give him serious trouble. MIPS meanwhile has a widely-varied list of moves and can take a hit and give a lot back if Ford needs a moment to rethink strategy or potion someone up. He won't be bringing a huge amount of restorative items and he won't use them unless he's really in a tight spot, though. He likes to play things pretty close to the wire.

AS FOR SPECIES UHHHH Tell me about potential Aerodactyl, Tyrunt or Lileep, I'm lookin to get Ford more Fossils.
no subject
Lileep
Moveset A: Ancient Power, Return, Protect, Substitute, Sandstorm, Round, Rock Tomb, Natural Gift, Tickle, Stealth Rock
Personal rec: ...Man, it's lucky Mortblossom is monogamous, because Lileep's partner pool is pretty boring.
Tyrunt
Moveset A: Earthquake, Horn Drill, Return, Rock Smash, Strength, Iron Tail, Round, Brick Break
Moveset B: Ancient Power, Stealth Rock, Round, Return, Rock Smash, Earthquake, Bulldoze, Dark Pulse
Moveset C: Bite, Thrash, Earthquake, Strength, Rock Smash, Return, Stone Edge, Dark Pulse, Dragon Pulse, Attract, Round, Dragon Dance, Ice Fang
Moveset D: Bite, Thrash, Earthquake, Dragon Tail, Strength, Rock Smash, Return, Toxic, Facade, Round/Dragon Dance, Ice Fang
Moveset E: Dragon Tail, Earthquake, Horn Drill, Dragon Claw, Strength, Rock Smash, Return, Iron Tail, Aerial Ace, Dragon Pulse, Round, Dragon Dance
Moveset F: Bide, Earthquake, Dragon Tail, Return, Toxic, Strength, Rock Smash, Iron Tail, Round
Personal rec: Movesets C and E are particularly sweet, but everything's usable in there. I'd like to point out that every single one of those babies is born with Earthquake. No child should be trusted with such power.
Aerodactyl
Moveset A: Take Down, Giga Impact, Roar, Swift, Natural Gift, Dragon Breath, Fly, Rock Smash, Dragon Pulse, Sky Attack, Return, Iron Tail, Earthquake, Round, Flamethrower, Steel Wing, Roost
Moveset B: Agility, Return, Round, Fly, Captivate, Roost
Personal rec: I cannot in good conscience recommend moveset B, unless you find the image of an Aerodactyl daddy with an Oricorio mommy truly amusing.

Thace is trying to face all the Aurora Gyms before he joins the League.
no subject
no subject
Strategy:
Thace has decided that Cecil’s gym doesn’t suit his preferred strategy very well. He doesn’t like to take risks if he can avoid it, but this gym is going to require him to pit his Pokemon against super effective moves. He’s brought revives in case of accidental fainting, but is going to try to avoid it if at all possible, and many many potions and other curative items. If he doesn’t have the time to craft thorough (and as-minimal-damage-as-possible) wins, he’s going to come in hard, and fast. He is anxious during the whole thing, and ready to switch out his Pokemon to keep his strategy going whenever Cecil does. He also doesn’t speak a word, using hand signals exclusively to hopefully keep Cecil and his Pokemon guessing about what’s coming next.
Vs Dragonite
—Acxa comes out with a Blizzard right away, which will be super accurate due to her Hidden Ability. Then she’ll use Aurora Veil, and go back to powering Blizzards with Laser Focus until she’s hanging on by a thread. She’ll shoot off a quick Toxic and switch.
—Brodar will throw out a Draco Meteor, tank for a turn for Acxa healing, and leave with a Tailwind.
—Zaivar will start with Heal Block and Crafty Shield, and hit with Play Rough for as long as they can manage. They’ll hit with another Heal Block before he leaves.
—Hopefully during the above Dragonite will go down, but Acxa will come in again and Laser Focus Blizzard a couple times to hopefully finish it if Dragonite hasn’t.
Vs Blissey
—Brodar will come in with Supersonic, tank for off-field healing, and leave with Super Fang.
—Zaivar will come in with Heal Block and jump back out.
—Ankuyr will come in and Bulk Up for as many turns as they safely can. By then their HP will be dangerously low, so they’ll Endure, and use Reversal!
—hopefully Blissey will go down from that, but Brodar will come back in with more Supersonic, Super Fang if her HP is still fairly high, and then Boomburst to hopefully finish it.
Vs Heracross
—Zaivar will set Crafty Shield and Play Rough several times. They will tank for other off-field healing and then jump out with a Metal Sound as a parting move.
—Brodar will come in with a Super Sonic and start spamming Fly.
—Hopefully that will be enough, but Acxa will come back in and use the cover of their Hail to attack with Moonblasts.
Vs Lapras
—Dzur comes in with Sand Attack several times. Then will hit with Rock Tomb and Stone Edge.
—Dzur will probably have to come out and Zaivar will come in with Heal Block and tank a little bit for off-field healing.
—Brodar will come in with Tailwind, Supersonic, and Wild Charge to hopefully finish it.
Vs Chandalure
—Gyxdo comes in and sets Sandstorm before spamming Earthquake and Rock Tomb as long as possible. When things get down to the wire, Gyxdo will tank for healing.
—Brodar will come in with Taunt and Water Pulse!
—Hopefully that was enough but Ankuyr will come in to tank for off-field healing so that Gyxdo and Brodar can do their thing again.
Vs Chesnaught
—Acxa will start with her HA Laser Focused Blizzards and things are going slow, tank for a turn for off-field healing.
—Zaivar will come in Crafty Shield and Play Rough for a turn or two
—if that’s not enough Gyxdo will hit with Flamethrower a few times and tank for off-field healing
—Brodar will finish it with Fly!
no subject
Throughout the battle, it seems the attacks of Thace's Pokémon do far less damage than they should, somehow. Why, when Osmose gets hit by Brodar's Fly, he even starts giggling! How odd.
Of course, Thace is more than welcome to request another match after a day's rest. He can even grab food from the kitchen and stay in one of the side rooms in the meantime. Until he's ready to try again, Cecil recommends that he enjoy the atmosphere and decoration of the Gym. He sounds particularly proud of the six paintings displayed in the main corridor...
no subject
and mebasically had no idea how inverse matches work, oops! (ICly Thace didn't even know they were possible)Thace gets increasingly agitated during, and will actually have pantomime discussions with his Pokemon during healings. He will switch strategy on the fly, and notice the damage done by attacks he knows should do little to nothing to his team (or are doing nothing when he knows they should be super effective). Unfortunately by the time he figures it out he'll be too deep in a hole to salvage the match. He'll forfeit probably 5/6s of the way through, and immediately request another match the next day.
no subject
Would you like me to randomize the new team immediately?
no subject
steel typesPokemon with lots of resistances. It's going to be great!no subject
As a bonus, while he plans his team, a batch of freshly-baked cookies will come out of the oven. Enjoy!
no subject
Strategy:
After a frustrated lover’s spat over the confusion of the gym’s gimmick, making up, and another strategy session together, Thace feels a little better about this battle than the last one. He still can’t have a battle to his preferred style, because guess who mainlines steel-types? But he has a few that aren’t part steel, and has ransacked his stores for as many healing items of all kinds as he can. Berries and lemonades and fresh waters and he’s even pulled out all the potions and things he’s never really used before.
Vs Arbok
—Pevox is sent in first with Hypnosis, Misty Terrain and Moonblast (if Hypnosis isn’t successful or wears off, Taunt). Lather rinse repeat
—Vruli will come in to tank for healing, and then fire off a Solar Beam, then some Brick Break.
—if that’s not enough, even though he’s weak, Trax will come in and Hammer Arm a couple times.
Vs Gyarados
—Vruli will come in with Taunt, Supersonic, Howl, Whirlpool and Surfs, while refreshing Taunt. She will Rest and Sleep Talk if she needs to. Thace will take a turn to heal others while she Rests.
—Lahn comes in to refresh Taunt and use some Iron Tails. U-Turn if he needs to get out before Gyarados goes down.
—Trax is on standby as a backup’s backup to slam down some Taunts and Laser Focused Earthquakes before he’s damaged too much which should hopefully take Gyarados down.
Vs Sandslash
—Lahn Taunts, Nasty Plot then Power Gem. He’ll refresh Taunt as necessary, and some Double Teams when he gets a chance.
—Vruli will come in and Supersonic and Taunt, then tank for off-field healing, before laying in with Thunder Punch and Thunder Fang, refreshing Taunt as necessary.
—Trax is fulfilling his role as backup’s backup will Swords Dance, Laser Focus and Smack Down
Vs Volcarona
—Trax either comes in or stays in and starts with Toxic and a couple Mud-Slaps to lower accuracy. Then a U-Turn!
—Pevox comes back in with Hypnosis. If it takes, Thace heals all his other Pokemon while Volcarona sleeps. Then Taunt and Moonblast, with Life Dew and Wish as needed for self healing.
—if the healing can’t keep up Rorlka will come in with Taunt, Role Play and then Future Sight and some Psychics.
Vs Zoroark
—Rorlka is either coming in or staying in. Taunt as always. Calm Mind, Future Sight, Kinesis and a couple Psychics. Recover will see use for self-healing. Lather rinse repeat.
—Athvrix is coming in with Reflect. Then she’ll use Future Sight and Sucker Punch. And maybe some Psychic once she’s out of Sucker Punch.
—Trax is the backup’s backup again, if he needs to. Swords Dance, Laser Focus and Earthquake.
Vs Persian
—Trax comes in first with Super Fang! He’ll tank for healing, and then Laser Focus Earthquake then out.
—Athvrix will come out fighting with Shadow Ball for as long as she can
—Vruli will also be using Shadow Ball if she needs to come in.
—Pevox will try for Hypnosis and Future Sight and Psychic
—Rorlka will Calm Mind and Future Sight
—Lahn …will use Pay Day, because he can but mostly to knock the other Persian off guard a bit.
what Persian wouldn’t feel the urge to pounce them with all those shiny coins rolling aroundMud Slap and Bite will be his main attacks.no subject

Randomize me!
(He's tagging along with his new boyfriend on his quest to do the Aurora League gyms before they go up Victory Road.)

So. Yeah. Let's just handwave that Steven also gets completely creamed his first attempt because he also forgot/didn't realize this was the inverse battle gym (he thought the mirror matches were its special 'hat') and I'll have you the actual write up soonish?
(P.S. you don't have to re-randomize if you don't want to, especially since I didn't give you a write-up. Steven would be happy to go back against the Pokemon he lost to the first time.)

But Cecil will insist on a fresh team anyway, so! Steven will now be facing team New Moon. Luxray, Gardevoir, Lucario, Steelix, Froslass, Goodra; more info available if you click the team's name in the table higher up. Fresh cookies are on the kitchen table.
(if you want to read the thread it's at least starting out sfw)
We decided that they challenged Cecil on Fighty Friday and are threading out the aftermath of them being angry and confused...and then I realized the gym isn't open on Fridays because my reading comprehension is terrible these days but OH WELL they're still being both crabby on a day that isn't Friday no matter what the header says.)Anyway. I SHALL BE BACK SOON.
THE ACTUAL MATCH
Strategy: Surprisingly enough, Steven brings the same team to face Cecil's New Moon team as he did in his disastrous attempt against the Waxing Moon team, but there's a reason for this: they're his future Elite Four team and he wants to get some practice in with them as a team.
Anyway, unlike his new boyfriend, Steven doesn't have a layered strategy involving a lot of switching pokemon in and out. Instead, he designates a particular Pokemon for a particular fight, with back-ups in mind in case they go down--though hopefully now that he understands inverse battles better that won't happen.
Steven's main opponent against Luxray is William, his secondary starter, whose partial Flying-type proves advantageous against Electricity in an inverse battle. Luxray is already at a disadvantage to hit due to William being of the opposite sex to her, given her Rivalry, but he's going to use Attract to reduce that even more, as well as Taunting to seal off any status effects. After that it's a combination of Flying and Dual Wingbeats to finish her off. (Charlotte is back-up for this match, hitting Luxray in the Electricity with Rising Voltage if she's subbed in.)
His main opponent against Gardevoir happens to be Charley, his primary starter, who despite being a Ghost has a number of Psychic attacks in her pocket to smack up a Gardevoir with and being a Ghost, won't be as vulnerable in an inverse battle as another Psychic would be. She'll be avoiding status attacks given Gardevoir's Synchronize, Taunting early on to keep Gardevoir from hitting her with status attacks, and quite possibly throwing on Embargo to keep Cecil from healing Gardevoir with potions. After that it's time to smack and smack hard with Psychic. Repeatedly. (William and El Diablo are both possible back-ups, with William Zen Headbutting and El Diablo Brick Breaking, but El Diablo is less vulnerable in an inverse battle so he'd be sent in first.)
Against Lucario, Steven plans to pit Charlotte, hoping to use her Bug attacks to ruin the Fighting pokemon's day. Sticky Web to slow Lucario down, Screech to fuck up his defense, and then we Skitter Smack a bit in hopes of fucking up Lucario's special attack as well, with some Bug Buzzing to similarly fuck up special defense. Then it's a lot of X-Scissoring. Maybe a Toxic. (Fail Whale is back-up for this match, since he's got a lot of useful attacks that hit things Lucario is now vulnerable to like Rock Tomb and Ice Beam and Heavy Slam.)
Against Steelix we have Little Timmy, whose Fairy-typing is suddenly strong against Steel here in the mixed-up world of inverse battling. She uses her Baby-Doll Eyes to get Steelix to let their guard down, then hits them with a combo of Dazzling Gleams with some Draining Kisses to keep her health up. Toxic doesn't hurt either. (Charley and William with their Psychic attacks and Charlotte with her Bug attacks are possible back-up for this match and will be subbed in according to who is in the best shape.)
For the match against Froslass, Steven's main Pokemon is El Diablo, whose Fighting attacks should really ruin her day given how they'd normally be unable to touch her. After Taunting to keep her from using status moves, El Diablo Sword Dances to up his attack, then it's Brick Breaking, Rock Smashing, and if he's doing well for hit points perhaps a High Jump Kick. He can use some Toxic here as well. (Charlotte and Fail Whale are back-up here, with her X-Scissoring and him Ice Beaming.)
Finally, Steven is sending Fail Whale out as his main opponent against Goodra, since Goodra is vulnerable to Water attacks while inversed. After Noble Roaring to fuck up Goodra's attack and special attack, Fail Whale goes immediately to Water Spouting while he's still got most of his HP and then Surfs and Hydro Pumps to make Goodra wet and miserable and hopefully fainted. (Charlotte is the back-up for this match, using Discharge and Rising Voltage to hit Goodra in the inversed Electricity weakness.)
ANYWAY. Hopefully this time around Steven will have acquitted himself much better that our handwaved first attempt and they won't have to stay at Cecil's gym yet another night.
