[The view of route 31 is nice enough. The sun is peeking between the clouds and shining upon the snow, which looks pure and untouched... Except for a small section where a Dratini is attacking every wild Pokémon he sees while a Feebas cheers him on. Luckily, their trainer is feeling too nostalgic to scold them.]

The last Pokémon I caught for myself was Esuna, nearly a month before I first reached this city. It happened not too far from the cave, in fact... But since then, my team has grown through eggs and gifts exclusively. Is it the same for anyone else?

[The camera is still pointing at route 31, but it turns a little toward the south, toward the city that lies beyond route 30.]

I'll leave for Cherrgrove tonight. I'll reach it soon, I promise.

[And the camera turns back to the training Dratini, until the feed times out.]

I never actually...caught a pokemon. [Chuckle] Most of mine came from eggs, too.

I only caught two: Avenger and Esuna. Both of them in September. That's... my starter, two caught, three eggs, one gift and two received from someone who left. I doubt there are many more ways to obtain a Pokémon.

Four of my party came from eggs. Then there was my starter...I guess Archimedes is the closest to a capture. [Sheepish grin] He sort of decided to follow me, so I'm not sure if that really counts, though.

That should count as a capture. You still had to put him in a pokéball, did you not?

...does it still count if he sort of went in the ball himself?

...I caught Avenger accidentally on my third try, and it counts. A Pokémon choosing to enter a pokéball is definitely a capture.

Oh. I guess I've got one capture, then. [Pause] How did you accidentally catch a pokemon?

By missing with the first ball, accidentally hitting a friend with the second, and catching the Pokémon with the third that you just threw to the side while running to see if said friend was hurt. My first capture was... memorable.

That's...really something. What pokemon was it?

Avenger is a Banette, but he was a Shuppet at the time. I cannot show him to you at the moment, but he's a Ghost-type, and he looks like a particularly evil-looking doll.

That's all right. I've seen a Shuppet before, though not in the...best circumstances. Does yours play tricks on your friends?

Avenger was more of the 'argumenting with other Pokémon' type, though he did play tricks. But he's long since stopped those.

Did he stop after he evolved? [Maybe there's hope for Ven, after all...]

I think he stopped before that. He put most of his energy in his rivalry with Rosie, so his tricks were always small and restrained.

[...or not] What sort of tricks did he get up to?

He'd jump out from behind doors suddenly, hide Rosie's favorite paintbrush beneath the bed... It was small mischief, really.

Yeah, that doesn't sound too terrible. [Sigh] I think my friend's shuppet just might be a special case, then.

Why? Is he particularly misbehaved?

Just toward one person in particular. She ah...snipped off some of our friend's hair last time.

She was the one who upset Rise? ...Is she still in one piece? Touching a young lady's hair can have rather violent consequences.

That's the one. And...yeah, she's ~~surprisingly~~ still in one piece. If she weren't a pokemon, though, I'd probably be more worried for her.

They do tend to be extremely resilient. In five months, none of mine have received grievous injuries, no matter how much they battled.

Still...best not push them too hard, yeah? It isn't fair if they're the only ones doing all the work around here. [Shoots a smile at his off-screen Riolu]

Of course not. I make certain to treat them the same way I would treat my son: not too harshly, but not too softly either. I'd not want them to become spoiled and selfish.

Your son? [His lips quirk] I guess the pokemon sort of are like children. [Pause] Some of them, at least.
