[The view of route 31 is nice enough. The sun is peeking between the clouds and shining upon the snow, which looks pure and untouched... Except for a small section where a Dratini is attacking every wild Pokémon he sees while a Feebas cheers him on. Luckily, their trainer is feeling too nostalgic to scold them.]

The last Pokémon I caught for myself was Esuna, nearly a month before I first reached this city. It happened not too far from the cave, in fact... But since then, my team has grown through eggs and gifts exclusively. Is it the same for anyone else?

[The camera is still pointing at route 31, but it turns a little toward the south, toward the city that lies beyond route 30.]

I'll leave for Cherrgrove tonight. I'll reach it soon, I promise.

[And the camera turns back to the training Dratini, until the feed times out.]

[They aaaaall did. Even the six foot long dragon that is currently massacring Bellsprouts.]

[ She nods. Glancing at said dragon for a moment before turning back to him. ]

He told me I should be traveling with you and Pence to the next city.

That would be a good idea. I have an Arcanine who can move from Cherrygrove to Violet in four days. It would save you some time and keep you safe from the cold. I should reach Cherrygrove by Thursday; will you want to leave quickly, or would you prefer to work and explore first?

[ Arcanine? She wonders what that looks like. ]

I'd like to leave quickly, but we should also think about Pence in this, too. I'll be fine with whatever option. [ A beat, and she bows her head a little. ] I'm sorry for the trouble, Cecil.

I will asked for his preference, then. [He smiles.] It is no trouble. The journey is short, and Edward will not need me by his side all the time. Besides, it is our pleasure to help. Is that not right, Flare?

Yes. This is Flare; I received him as an egg three months ago. He looks rather strong, does he not?

[ Wow. Those eggs must be really special. She nods quickly. ]

Just three months? [ She can only imagine how tiny the Pokemon was before those three months came to pass. ]

Well, he was much smaller when he was a Growlithe. Being that tall is a recent development; he evolved into Arcanine three weeks ago. But Pokémon become stronger much more quickly than humans.

By battling, right?

Yes. They can battle from the moment they are born, and some of them already feel the inclination to do so. [At this, he points at the Dratini.] But the greatest bursts of strength come from evolution, and not all of those are caused by battling.

There are other methods?

[He nods.] Some species, such as Growlithes, evolve by touching special stones. Others, like Cleffa, do so if they are kept happy for an extended period of time. But evolution through combat is the most common method.

Oh... I think I witnessed a Pokemon evolving, actually.

Is that so? Which species was it?

It was called "Togetic, the Happiness Pokemon." I was talking with someone, and then it saw me, and... I guess it was so happy to see me that it... changed.

That sounds like happiness-induced evolution indeed. Meeting must have been the small push it needed to feel true joy.

Apparently it was mine before I came here. I don't remember it at all. [ Sounds almost guilty at this, considering the thing obviously remembered her. ]

...You remember nothing of Johto, but others said that you were here previously, then? It happens, sometimes.

[ Nods. So she's heard. ]

Um... how long until you get here?

Four days or so. [In a hail storm. Arcanines are awesome.] However, Flare will need a day or two to rest before we can leave for Violet.

[ Nods again. He's going through all the trouble, so... ] That's fine.

Five days is the minimum time you are required to work in this work. You can use those days to obtain some funds, if you wish. Living off battles is hard to manage in this world.

Oh. [ Blinks. ] So I'll meet you in Cherrygrove, right?

Yes. In front of the Pokémon Center, perhaps? It would be hard to miss each other there.
