[Many objects are piling up in front of the Pokégear: food reserves, drinks, Potions of all kinds, enough Ice Heals to last a month, Pokéballs... Could someone be insane enough to brave the tempest?]

Squall, Suzuki, I'm leaving for Goldenrod; I need to buy a few items. Would you like me to bring you back anything? Oh, and Squall, a young lady was looking for you.

[Rosie appears, bearing a few Escape Ropes. She dumps them next to the pile before looking around for gloves.]

I'll try to defeat the Gym leader during my stay. Light, Firion, Bartz, Zidane, Miss Lenna, we could meet up at the Sudowoodo after that.

[But already he's paying more attention to his supplies than to his Pokégear. Avenger sighs and turns it off.]

How cruel... To think that they would be willing to go that far, even though being abandoned is the worst feeling for a child...

Some people...will do anything for power. It is sad...but it's very true.

...Did the two of you... have any brothers?

_{[Iris closes her eyes.]} ...Not that I am aware of. For their sake, I dearly hope not.

Did she not try to contact you even once, to make sure you were well cared for?

_{[Iris shakes her head.]} I doubt she even was told I was given to Sister Bikini. And she wouldn't have tried contacting my father again...

Is there a way for you to contact her, then?

...If she has not moved, then I should be able to reach her. But, I doubt she would want to hear from me.

I find that hard to believe. I'm sure she would feel some happiness, knowing that her daughter has become a wonderful young lady.

I wish that was so. Thank you, but I don't think my mother would see it that way. _{[Iris looks ready to burst into tears.]} Even after trying so hard, my spiritual powers are still non-existent.

And your village only chooses its leader based on her power? Other talents are not considered?

That's right. One only gains influence by being a member of the Main Family. But, my family became a Branch family when my aunt Misty Fey became Master. Now, in order for my mother to regain power, she needs a daughter with more powerful spiritual powers than that of my cousins. I do not know if she has succeeded in this venture.

It sounds as though your village's hierarchy has been designed specifically to cause strife within families. Then again, I suppose the same thing could have happened to Baron, had circumstances been different.

I don't think that was there intention, but it certainly has caused many problems.

How does Baron's government work?

Baron is a monarchy. Not an absolute monarchy, of course, but it is hereditary. We do have a council made up of the noble houses, and the army answers directly to the king.

...And everyone gets along?

Of course not. The nobles want more power, or the throne itself. The people want wealth, even if it depletes our ressources. But all of them want stability more than anything else, so they cause little trouble.

Dear. That sounds frightening! The peace could be destroyed so easily. How on earth do you handle it all?

_{[Iris smiles.]} If you have those things, I'm sure you're handling it well.

...And the royal family? They must be under a great deal of pressure.

.......All rulers are under pressure. But Baron is easier than quite a few other kingdoms. [Is he being vague on purpose, or...?]

That's good to hear! Rulers have to show a good example for their people! _{[I have no idea. But, Iris still has no clue the royal family and Cecil's family are one and the same.]}

Too many rulers take their position for granted. They forget their responsibilities, and think only of their pleasure. Luckily, most of the current rulers are good people. [He is, actually. And it's not like he shared that with a lot of people.]

...That's too bad. A ruler should be a fair, honest, and just person. And the people should always come first. Otherwise the kingdom could fall apart!

And if a bad ruler doesn't destroy his kingdom, his people or enemy countries will do it for him.
