[The scene is chaotic and glorious: Pokémon shouting, yelling, pleading, all at the same time and at the loudest volume they can manage. Yet somehow, the following can be heard...]

[Not that Cecil's request is heeded. He sighs, and addresses the Pokégear directly.]

With the new additions to Goldenrod's catalog, I thought shopping might be a good idea, and it appears my Pokémon agree. Will anyone need something from that list? Some of those items can be rather expensive for newcomers, especially if you've not yet found work. As long as you tell me where you are, I can ask the store to post it to you.

[If he survives the yelling Poképile, that is.]

And the rest of us?

Foreigners who apparently have much trouble fitting in.

Maybe we're not supposed to.

Yet giving us Pokémon seems to be an attempt at it.

I wouldn't call it that on my life.

Why? Are yours particularly badly behaved?

They're actually pretty good. They know when to listen anyway.

It's just... other things.

I have to admit, I cannot see how Pokémon in general can be considered torture.

You've never really thought about the concequences of this kind of place, have you?

As far as I can tell, there are none. It's certainly less dangerous than the last time I was brought to another world.

That's just another problem. If you think about it, there should be. Criminals, thieves, people who just have a weakness for power; where are they?

The fact that almost every person brought here is the kind of person that wouldn't abuse this is just... annoying. It's not real. Humanity isn't this perfect, this cherrypicked.

This land does have its crimes and troubles. In fact, a few months ago, a newcomer attacked every single inhabitant of New Bark Town, leaving them grievously wounded. And that's not counting the people who abuse their Pokémon, or all those rumors about Team Rocket.

If the best you've got is rumors and something that happened a few months ago, that just proves my point. Things like that, in the real world, would be happening daily. With these monsters, there should be murders, looting, all hell breaking loose.

But it's not.

The Pokémon tend to stay away from large human settlements. Even if they were dangerous, that would reduce the attacks and casualties greatly. Then again, I'm surprised they stay away even without guards and watches.

They're still animals. You do see some in town every so often, but most of the time they're gonna stick to where they're supposed to live. A bear isn't going to decide it wants to get an apartment or a room at an inn, it's going to want to live in the forest, you know?

But... I'm really talking about the human factor though. There aren't nearly enough people taking advantage of this situation.

But the bear might decide that the waste coming from the local butcher's shop might make for a tasty treat. Yet we rarely see Pokémon scavenge, even the birds.

They've had Pokémon by their sides for at least hundreds of years. If this is normal to them, there'd be nothing to take advantage of.

To them, maybe, but I have my doubts about them to begin with. What about us? I'm not a braniac like my cousin or my best friend, but the chances of not getting someone who would abuse this situation must be a million times lower if this is all random.

That has to mean we're being picked on purpose.

The problem with the chosen theory is that being in Johto is apparently the only thing we all have in common. Even if there was something else, how could we tell, between all the arrivals and disappearances?

It's not necessarily that we're going to have things in common or not, just maybe that we won't cause the trouble that the human race is capable of.

There isn't a single reason that this world should have lasted longer than a month, even a few weeks, except for the fact that it's picking people who won't outright try to screw it over.

Survival instincts strike me as a very useful trait for a world to have. Of course, that still would not explain how we are chosen.

They tend to pick people who won't take a Pokemon with a horn and stab people en masse with it or perform mass electric executions or burn down all the buildings. Stuff that you could do in about two minutes with as many Pokemon.

Now are you with me?

...There was one case. A poisoning, one that was deliberate and had to be treated with more than the usual antidote. Still... Even the people who are attacked by the Sudowoodo are fine after a few days of rest. Being hit by a tree made of rock should be enough to kill a civilian, should it not? And all of those people who are electrocuted by their Electric-types...

... Maybe it just wasn't enough for them.
