95th moon [we're all walled in]

[One tiny and sad advantage to having gone through this whole circus eight times is that at some point, nothing can surprise you anymore. Not even waking up on a park bench in Goldenrod with a Goldeen in your arms, a Magikarp tangled in your hair and a Finneon almost kissing you.

...Okay, so maybe that particular situation does surprise Cecil a little. Juste a little.

But certainly not enough to stop him from taking care of his weekly grocery shopping at the Department Store. Even if he's still wearing his pyjamas, his hair is messy, his make-up is nowhere to be seen and he has three fish in his shopping basket. He doesn't care about such silly details.

He does, however, care enough to greet the poor confused or not-so-confused people that surround him. The local biannual madness is no reason to be rude, after all.]

Well, he really ought to. It's important to be proud of one's heritage.

But it's also important to have your own identity, separate from your heritage.

I suppose you can always make your own path, but you must never forget where you come from, and all of the responsibilities that entails.

[But then, Kain has always been obsessed with his heritage, with being a Highwind, a dragoon, a Baronian.]

Ceodore knows his responsibilities all too well. I know he'll rise up to them magnificently... but I also want him to shine in his own way, more brightly than I ever will.

More brightly than you? That would be pretty blinding.

The people of Baron will simply have to learn to live without functioning eyes, then.

We've made plenty of mistakes, over the years. That does reduce one's radiance.

But relative to others, yours are hardly as dark as many of theirs.

Earning forgiveness for an act does not necessarily repair the damage it caused.

A fact I know all too well… [He just sighs, not sure he can argue anything about the matter.]

Exactly. I do what I can to repair the damage I've caused, but neither town will ever be as they were before.

If only there were a way to undo such damage... but it's not to be.

Indeed. I've spent much time looking for such a way, but never found it.

I know that feeling all too well. Perhaps it's not something ever meant to be found.

Surely it is. Thankfully, building something new from the ashes is sometimes an improvement.

An improvement? Do you truly think so?

Once you know what can destroy your home, you can invent ways to nullify those weaknesses. To a certain degree, of course.

Hm... I suppose there's truth in that, rebuilding a place to be much stronger and better than ever before. Of course, it's a shame the destruction has to happen in the first place... but sometimes it cannot be stopped.

If we cannot turn back time, we might as well ensure it does not repeat itself. Especially now that we know how destructive we can be.

Unfortunate that we had to lean that the hard way. But that's true enough. We've seen the worst... and I know I'll fight to ensure it never happens again.

...Never is a strong word, but we all will, as long as we still draw breath.

I'd fight to ensure that no such thing ever happens.
