[Today, Cecil is filming a small group of Pidgeys pecking at the ground and hunting for worms. It's a rather peaceful image, really.]

Route 25 is as far north as Kanto goes, it seems. Yet the same Pidgeys and Bellsprouts that can be found between New Bark and Violet live here. I wonder what makes certain species so widespread, while others can only rarely be found even in their natural habitats?

[Two of the Pidgeys start arguing over a particularly juicy bug. He looks at the scene for a few seconds, before he starts to put the Pokégear away with a few parting words.]

...Eleven out of sixteen. I think I'll aim for Celadon next.

Thank you. Battling Misty was quite interesting. She uses Water-types, and her Gym is a large pool. That gives her the advantage for most of the battle.

Although I suppose that's what makes you worthy of the badge if you defeat her with that massive advantage in her favour...

Most Gyms are adapted to their chosen type to some degree. Showing how we deal with it is also an important part of the battle, especially when the teams' levels are relatively close.

I take it you're heading toward your next one?

Not immediately, but soon. You see, five of Kanto's cities are relatively close by. I'd like to earn their badges quickly, since reaching the others will take much longer.

It could be something to do with niche evolution. Considering that most of Johto and Kanto appears to be fairly temperate in climate, it would make sense for certain species to be widespread whereas others only flourish in specific environments.

Work intensively for a few weeks, finish training my younger Pokémon... Perhaps I'll visit those few locations I've not seen on the way.

That would explain most of the Pokémon in the Ice Cave, at least. But what about species that live on, say, route 31 but not route 30? Those two connect to the north and look no different.

Probably something to do with food sources and living space. The ones with the broadest diets can live in the most places.

The roads are short and relatively flat. I know there is a mountain to the west and caves to the east, but that's all.

Truly? Our monsters are rarely so widespread, though most species had become more numerous not long before I arrived here.

I'm not sure if he acts like a dog or a cat though. Or maybe a behemoth.

He somewhat looks like a coeurl with the personality of a housecat.

[Harry's met at least one firebreathing tiger-puppy, but has not yet heard it identified by species. Nicknames are a double-edged sword sometimes.]

Could be other environmental issues keeping them in certain areas. Nesting sites, weather patterns, low reproduction rates, that kind of thing.

[Or the species in question largely have mentalities akin to big, friendly dogs that drool a lot.]

Fire-types would need warmer weather, probably. That would explain why they are not found so far north.
