At least he has some form of standards, though I imagine it's closer to survival instinct. No need to risk being thrown out of the team or rejected by his own relatives.

I agree with the survival instinct. As his mate and daughter are larger than he is, I doubt he's about to annoy them enough to make them step on him. His mother though is the only one he actually obviously respects, as far as I've seen. As for keeping me out of it? I have no idea.

You are the one with the power to keep him in his ball and hide him in the PC for the next few months. Perhaps he's hoping to avoid that particular outcome? I know it's not supposed to be too unpleasant for Pokémon, but it would surely be boring to a natural trickster.

Would those other things include moves with different effects? His restraint in this case could come from the raise in attack power or the confusion.

Those "other things" include pranks in general. He once collaborated with my Unfezant to clutter up my room with little rubber balls that squeak when squeezed.
