[Like much of Johto and Kanto, Cecil's backyard has been invaded by a group of angry fossils. Two of them, in fact; a swarm of Cradilies and a band of Omastars have apparently started a war over that tiny piece of land, neither side willing to back down and move elsewhere. Add to that Cecil's team, protecting their home, along with the local Grimers trying to reclaim one of their favorite pond, and you get a very interesting image.

...Or at least you would, if Cecil wasn't busy filming the Lileep and Omanyte pair blissfully snuggling on his roof instead.]

I know we are to defeat or capture as many fossils as we can, but is stopping them all truly necessary? While they are obviously rebelling against their families, those two look harmless at least, and I've no doubt others-

[He has no doubt others are more than willing to use hastily snatched Grimers as ammo against innocent people's faces. Because that's what one of the Cradilies just did. And the damn Grimer doesn't even have the decency to not drip all over the Gear, either.]

...On second thought, we should burn them all.

[Which is exactly what he's about to do.]

Makes me think that maybe I got off easy with Heartless and Nobodies.

Truly? I doubt monsters with such names are pleasant to face.

None of them are like your tentacle thing. Some of the bigger ones, maybe...

Usually Heartless and Nobodies are small enough. They come in pretty big numbers to make up for it.

That's not any better, if you have no magic or a weapon with little reach. Though fighting as a group does help with that problem.

Yeah, but you can always improvise. I mean, I always fight with my friends by me so I'm never really alone.

[paladinlost]

That's always an advantage. Easily the best aspect of this particular world, too.

So why'd you have to fight monsters?

[paladinlost]

They're as omnipresent in my world as Pokémon are in this one. I have to fight them merely to reach my own town's port.

[heartdive]

...Omnipresent?

[paladinlost]

...On a bad day you can hardly take five steps outside Baron without dodging a goblin aiming for your knees. They're like the Rattatas on route 29; it's impossible to avoid them.

That makes more sense. Shadows are like that. They're pretty much in every world ever that I've been to.

[paladinlost]

In caves and forests, rivers and towns, especially when you have no wish to see them?

[heartdive]

Yeah, more or less.

[paladinlost]

I bet seeing them fills your heart with joy and happiness.

[heartdive]

Not really... But if it's just Shadows, I don't think that's a bad thing. They are the darkness and since you can't ever completely get rid of darkness, they're gonna remain too.

[paladinlost]

...Are they a representation of darkness as an element, or darkness as in the darker side of humanity?

[heartdive]

A Heartless is formed when someone loses their heart to darkness. So, basically, they are literally the darkness that's in peoples' hearts.

[paladinlost]

Truly, now? I've seen a monster created from the hatred in everyone's hearts before, but merely darkness...

[For a moment, a flash of dread fills his heart. He ignores it.]

It's not hopeless. I was one, for a little while... Not that I remember anything about that.

...For an ex-creature of pure darkness, you look surprisingly healthy, I must say.
