You'd think that after a year and seven months, the locals would be unable to surprise me anymore.

[This strange introduction comes with the image of an innocent-looking house. An innocent-looking house that has a pond and fences blocking its door, in fact. Rosie the Clefable is standing in front of it; every so often, she pokes the water's surface with curiosity.]

Necessitating either Surf or Fly to leave your house cannot possibly be practical. What if your Water- and Flying-types are ill? What if you have guests? What if your children wish to go play with friends? I doubt it's even sufficient to stop... thieves...

[He trails off as he stares in horror at the pond. Even Rosie stops touching the water and joins him in staring. Of course, that could be because of the slimy purple limb that just grabbed her arm.]

...Having Grimers in your water cannot be healthy. Goodness.

[He turns the Gear off, now. His little girl needs rescuing.]

... I can't even say that's a lot, since I'm packing twenty...

We do seem to accumulate them, after spending enough time here.

Haaaaaaa... and I try so hard to keep myself limited so I can raise the ones I already have higher...

I've taken to letting them go free while I work. They all are quite dilligent, and it gives excellent results.

... eh? Let them go... free? As in... not personally command them? You can do that??

Of course, as long as you trust them to behave. ...I'd not try it with a Slowpoke, however.

Er... It's not that, exactly... It's more... With their personalities, most of them would just go off and play or take a nap instead.

If you offered them treats for reaching certain objectives, perhaps...

Positive reinforcement. You could also replace the treats with activities they enjoy.

I try to spend as much time as I can training them, truly. But I must also feed them, and buy the TMs that suit them best. If that means long working hours, so be it.

You could say I have something of a backlog myself, but I expect I'll someday find a shop that sells practical but extremely expensive items. I'd rather not risk missing them.

Of course. Expensive weapons and armor tend to last much longer than their cheaper counterparts. As long as the cost comes from materials and not from useless decorations, of course.

In that case, the unadorned object of the same quality is the better option, even if it is made from poor materials.
